Value of Sparse Structures in Dynamic Reusable Resource Allocation with Waiting
Time&Date:
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM, 2024/06/19 (Wednesday)

Room 619, Teaching A Building
Speaker:
Dr. Yue Hu (Stanford University)
Abstract:
We study the dynamic resource allocation problem in online service platforms featuring reusable resources, waiting space, and heterogeneous demands and resources. The service provider aims to balance the trade-off between maximizing revenue and minimizing waiting times across various demand types. For this problem, we propose a comprehensive framework to minimize the long-run average revenue loss and waiting cost by simultaneously designing the 1) flexibility structure, 2) admission control, and 3) scheduling policy. The flexibility structures are tailored to systems with varying levels…

Latent Factor Analysis in Short Panels
Time&Date:
01:30 pm-03:00 pm, June 19, 2024 (Wednesday)
Venue

Speaker:
Prof. Olivier Scaillet (University of Geneva)
Abstract:
We develop inferential tools for latent factor analysis in short panels. The pseudo maximum likelihood setting under a large cross-sectional dimension n and a fixed time series dimension T relies on a diagonal T×T covariance matrix of the errors without imposing sphericity nor Gaussianity. We outline the asymptotic distributions of the latent factor and error covariance estimates as well as of an asymptotically uniformly most powerful invariant (AUMPI) test for the number of factors based on the likelihood ratio statistic. We derive the AUMPI characterization from inequalities ensuring the monotone likelihood ratio…

We document that support for the ruling party (“partisanship”) increases the take-up of government programs in which participation is costly. The take-up rates of a large-scale Indian loan-guarantee program for firm financing, Mudra loans, diverged across low- and high-partisanship electoral districts but only months after the widely-advertised program’s launch, once rulers and the media related take-up rates to party success. In loan-level administrative data, borrowing firms’ risk, interest rates, subsequent default rates, and access to bank branches did not vary with partisanship. Regular-loan issuance, which captures…

The New Causal Macroeconomics of Subjective Expectations and Decisions
The New Causal Macroeconomics of Subjective Expectations and Decisions的主旨演讲。

Prof. Michael Weber (University of Chicago)
Abstract:
We study the redistributive effects of surprise inflation combining administrative bank data with an information provision experiment during an episode of historic inflation. On average, households are well-informed about prevailing inflation and are concerned about its impact on their wealth; yet, while many households know about inflation eroding nominal assets, most are unaware of nominal-debt erosion. Once they receive information on the debt-erosion channel, households view nominal debt more positively and increase estimates of their own real net wealth. These changes causally affect actual consumption and hypothetical debt decisions…

Abstract:
Transaction prices are negotiated in many markets. A midstream party can decide whether to bargain first with the upstream or the downstream partner in the supply chain. In addition, with the development of third-party informediaries, price-comparison platforms and new technologies (e.g., blockchain), the initially negotiated prices are becoming increasingly transparent to subsequent negotiators. In this research we examine the economic impacts of transparency and bargaining timing on equilibrium wholesale and resale prices, as well as on the generation and allocation of surplus among supply chain…

The Missing Information: Predicting Financial Advisor Misconduct Using Machine Learning

第一门是关于Leadership(领导力)的课程。
令她印象深刻的是,这位教授提出了一个理论,将不同的管理者分为四个层级:Coach(引导者)、Mentor(指导者)、Supporter(支持者)、Advisor(建议者)。
