Introduction

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK, Shenzhen), is a research-intensive university, established in 2014 through a Mainland - Hong Kong collaboration with staunch support from the Shenzhen Municipal Government. It inherits the fine academic traditions of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and will develop its academic programmes in phases and offer courses in Schools of Science and Engineering, Management and Economics, and Humanities and Social Science. The language of instruction is both English and Chinese, and students who satisfy the prescribed graduation requirements will receive degrees of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Ministry of Education has granted CUHK the authority to offer postgraduate programmes up to the PhD level from the date of its establishment. For the MPhil Stream:

  1. Lecture courses: Minimum of 30 units are required, with at least 18 units to be selected from Group A and the rest from Group B.
  2. Thesis research courses: Each student must register for Thesis Research courses each term. The minimum number of units per term is 6.
  3. Other courses:
    1. √  Research Seminars
    2. √  Thesis Writing and Defense

For the PhD Stream:

PhD candidates have to complete a minimum number of units of lecture courses and thesis research courses (on a per term basis), during the pre-candidacy and candidacy stage. However, since the study period of the students may vary, the total number of thesis research courses to be taken may also vary, which will affect the total number of units taken by each student for graduation.

For example:

(1)A student with a research master’s degree who pursues PhD study will have completed the following within the normative study period:

Pre-candidacy stage (max. 2 years): Lecture courses 30 units
Thesis research courses 6 units x 4 terms = 24 units
Candidacy stage (2 years): Research courses 12 units x 4 terms = 48 units

The student will therefore complete 102 units for graduation. (2)A student without a research master’s degree who pursues PhD study must take additional math course “ECO6201 Review of Quantitative Methods” (3 units) in the first year of the programme, and will have completed the following within the normative study period:

Pre-candidacy stage (max. 3 years): Lecture courses 33 units
Thesis research courses 6 units x 6 terms =36 units
Candidacy stage (2 years): Research courses 12 units x 4 terms = 48 units

The student will therefore complete 117 units for graduation.
